The picturesque village of Uitgeest has a lively centre with numerous shops, cafés and restaurants. Visit the ice shop on a hot summer day or hang out on the café’s terrace facing the town hall. Uitgeest is known for its characteristic buildings, such as its windmills and the Regthuys, a popular wedding location. The town’s outdoor swimming pool ‘De Zien’ organizes fun activities throughout the year and is open from late April to September. Deer Park Uitgeest is located next to the swimming pool. Right in between Uitgeest and Krommenie lies Fort aan den Ham: one of 42 forts part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Both young and old will enjoy the characteristic Uitgeestermeer and Alkmaardermeer: these beautiful lakes are perfect for a day of fun, relaxation or action. This is a great area for sailing, boating, cycling, hiking and canoeing. If you prefer the latter, there are several routes to choose from, such as the Broekermolen route, Dijkerhemme route (peat bog) or Busch en Dam route. All sailing, boating, cycling, hiking and canoeing routes are available from tourist information office ‘Lekker aan de Haven’. Don’t forget to check out the ‘Pontjesroute’; a cycling route with four ferry crossings; two of the ferries you can steer yourself!
Visit Heemskerk and Bakkum to enjoy the woody Dutch dune reserves that stretch out to a wonderful beach. The idyllic dunes of Bakkum have been home to many Dutch film productions, such as ‘De Storm’ and ‘Terug naar de Kust’. Visitor Centre De Hoep marks the start of your visit to the dunes of Castricum aan Zee. It teaches you everything you need to know about the flora and fauna in this fantastic dune area. This is an excellent location to visit with children! The beaches of Heemskerk, Castricum and Bakkum are within cycling distance of Watersports Centre Uitgeest.
Huis van Hilde in Castricum takes you along on an archeological journey through the area. This building was named after Hilde: a Bronze Age girl whose remnants were found in the centre of Castricum. Her body was reconstructed. You can also meet Aak, the boy from Uitgeest. When visiting Castricum, don’t forget to cycle through the lovely centre to see the ancient Dutch Reformed church, gamekeeper dwelling ‘Kijk-Uit’ and many typically North Holland farm houses.
The village of Akersloot borders on Uitgeest. Its pumping-station was built in Limmen, in 1879. More than a century ago this pumping-station kept everyone’s feet dry in the polder. Nowadays it is used as an exhibition space for changing expositions. Limmen is the capital of the bulb-growing industry in the Noord-Kennemerland area. Once a year the town transforms into a spectacular flower festival.
